According to a report by TMZ, Rob Reiner, his wife Michele, and their son Nick attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night, where a heated confrontation reportedly unfolded between father and son.

TMZ reported that Rob Reiner and Nick Reiner became involved in a “very loud argument” during the party, loud enough to be heard by multiple guests.

Within hours, the celebrated filmmaker and his wife were found dead at their Los Angeles home, and Nick Reiner was later arrested on suspicion of murder. Read more

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” former US President Barack Obama said in a social media post.

“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”

The Los Angeles Times and celebrity news website TMZ.com said the couple's daughter was the first to find her parents.

President Donald Trump stood by his comments ridiculing the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, even after the remarks prompted criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.

At an event in the Oval Office, Trump maintained his stance.

“I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned,” the president said. “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country,” he continued.

In 2015, Reiner directed a dramatic film called Being Charlie that was co-written by Nick. The semi-autobiographical story focused on a California gubernatorial candidate whose privileged son suffers from drug addiction and becomes a liability for his father.

In a clip from the AOL show Build Series, the late director, joined by his son, acknowledges the film “is loosely based on things that Nick went through and his relationship to me and his mother.”

Reiner said the film “definitely brought us closer together. Over a period of a year it was intense, difficult at times, but it was also the most satisfying creative experience I ever had.”

US President Donald Trump commented on the legendary director in a social media post, and noted a “very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” and continued to describe Rob Reiner as a “once very talented movie director” who passed away “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and booked for the murder of his parents, the Hollywood director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.

He was being held in jail in Los Angeles on no bail, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement on X.

Los Angeles Police Department officers have since cleared the Reiners’ home, leaving a private security firm to monitor the property. A member of the household staff has posted “no trespassing” notices at the entrance and along the driveway gates. While a small number of passers-by have occasionally stopped outside the residence, neighbours have so far declined to comment on the case.

Police said Nick Reiner had been booked for murder and remains in custody with no bail. Jail records viewable online had previously indicated that bail was set at $4 million, but those records have since been modified. In a statement released on Monday afternoon, police said their investigation revealed that Reiner had killed his parents and that he was arrested at around 9.15 p.m. on Sunday night. They added that the case would be presented on Tuesday to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. It remains unclear whether Reiner has legal representation.

Rob Reiner had a sophisticated understanding of American politics. He had always been close to Democrat politicians. In response to Trump's earlier post on Truth Social, Representative Thomas Massie of the Republic of Kentucky wrote, "Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered. I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it.”

Nick Reiner, has on many occasions, spoken about his past where he struggled with drug abuse and bouts of homelessness. In 2016, he told People's Magazine, “When I was out there, I could’ve died. It’s all luck. You roll the dice and you hope you make it.”

Nick Reiner, who is the couple's son and also the prime suspect in the murders of both Rob and Michele, has been arrested. According to online jail records, Nick has now been detained.

However, it should be noted that the Los Angeles police have not formally announced an arrest.

Police have reopened the street leading to the home of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner in Los Angeles’ Brentwood neighbourhood, the CNN reported.

Officers removed the police tape near the residence early on Monday, confirming that access to the street had been restored. However, the Reiners’ house remains largely hidden from view. Dense hedges surround the property, while the driveway is blocked by a solid white gate decorated with two holiday wreaths.

Brentwood is home to around 42,000 residents and is often described by the city as one of Los Angeles’ most affluent neighbourhoods. The upscale enclave is bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains, the city of Santa Monica, the San Diego Freeway, Mulholland Drive to the north and Wilshire Boulevard to the south, CNN reported.

Over the decades, Brentwood has attracted generations of high-profile residents. Notable figures who have lived in the area include Bea Arthur, Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Mickey Cohen, Joan Crawford, Dr Dre, Glenn Frey, LeBron James, Marilyn Monroe, Oliver Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Betty White.

The neighbourhood is also known for its upmarket commercial hubs, particularly along Wilshire and Sunset boulevards, which feature a mix of luxury retail, dining and offices.

Brentwood in Los Angeles is located roughly 540 miles southeast of Brentwood in California’s Bay Area, despite sharing the same name.

The Screen Actors Guild, which represents tens of thousands of actors, journalists and performers, has paid tribute to filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, following his death at the age of 78.

In a statement released on Sunday, the union remembered Reiner as a towering presence in the entertainment industry and a longtime member whose contributions shaped generations of storytelling.

“Rob Reiner stands among the most influential figures in the history of film and television,” said SAG president Sean Astin. “His contribution to American culture is profound, and the mark he left on our industry will endure.”

In the wake of the shocking news, tributes have poured in from across the film world. Among the most poignant was a message shared on social media by British comedian and actor Eric Idle, formerly of Monty Python. In his tribute, Idle recalled speaking with Reiner the night before his death, describing him as a “lovely man” whose company he always enjoyed. Idle said he first met Reiner in 1975 and fondly remembered conversations — including one about filming at Stonehenge and Reiner’s future plans. “I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful,” Idle wrote, capturing the deep sense of loss felt by colleagues and friends

The Los Angeles Police Department issued a statement on social media calling the case an "apparent homicide." Police had not detained anyone for questioning nor identified a suspect as of Sunday night, Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told a press conference.

A source familiar with the ongoing investigation, who was not authorised to speak publicly, said there were no signs of forced entry at the home and that the Reiners sustained injuries consistent with stab wounds, LA Times reported.

According to a report by The Times, a family member was being interviewed in connection with the deaths.

Reiner was born in the Bronx, NY, in 1947. His father was legendary comedian Carl Reiner and his mother was actress and singer Estelle Lebost, People's magazine reported.

Reiner first gained popularity for his role as Mike — a.k.a. Meathead — on the 1970s classic Norman Lear sitcom 'All in the Family'.

After leaving the series, he became a successful director, with iconic movies including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally... and A Few Good Men.

Michele Singer Reiner, dead at 67, made her own mark on Hollywood and political activism. She died Sunday in Los Angeles alongside her husband of three decades.

According to CNN, singer Reiner began her career as a photographer, working on the “MysteryDisc” video games and the thriller “Misery,” which Reiner directed. She also acted, starring in the Nora Ephron holiday movie “Mixed Nuts,” and produced several Reiner films including “Shock and Awe” and “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” which was released this year.

Kamala Harris said, “Rob Reiner's work has impacted generations of Americans. The characters, dialogue, and visuals he brought to life in film and television are woven throughout our culture. Rob loved our country, cared deeply about the future of our nation, and fought for America's democracy.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom said, “Jen and I are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.”

His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others — and encouraging us to dream bigger,” Newsom said.

“That empathy extended well beyond his films. Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights — from taking on Big Tobacco, fighting for marriage equality, to serving as a powerful voice in early education. He made California a better place through his good works.”

“Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity,” Newsom said.

Former US President Barack Obama said on X, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michelle."

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” Obama said.

He added, "Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Nick Reiner is the son of Rob Reiner. Reports claim that Nick killed Rob Reiner and Michele Singer on Sunday. The couple was reportedly stabbed to death.

In a statement to Variety, the family of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, said, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner."

"We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time," they were quoted as saying.

LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said on Monday investigators need to get a search warrant to conduct a “full crime scene investigation” at Rob Reiner’s home.

“We’re waiting for the legal process to move forward. We have to obtain a search warrant for the residence. Once that is complied with, we will be conducting a full crime scene investigation on the interior and exterior of the residence and the surrounding neighborhood,” Hamilton was quoted by CNN as saying.

Speculations are rife that two people found dead at Rob Reiner's LA home are him and his wife. However, LAPD has refrained from identifying those who died at Rob Reiner's home.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3:30 pm (local time), and found a 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman dead inside.

A Los Angeles Fire Department official told Reuters earlier that a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were found dead at a home in west Los Angeles at an address that public records linked to Reiner.

Los Angeles (LA) police said they are investigating what is suspected to be an “apparent homicide”. Their statement came as two people were found dead at the home of Hollywood director Robert Reiner.
