Shooting near University of Iowa campus, Hawk Alert issued
That alert reported a suspect running west away from the scene, in the direction of campus. It urged students to avoid the area or shelter in place.
Iowa City Police said a shooting incident happened near the University of Iowa campus on Friday afternoon. University of Iowa students received a Hawk Alert following the incident, urging them to shelter in place after gunshots were reported near campus.
That alert reported a suspect running west away from the scene, in the direction of campus. It urged students to avoid the area or shelter in place.“Gunshots in the area of Burlington and Governor suspect heading EB avoid the area and shelter in place. police on scene. Please remain vigilant, shelter in place, and report any suspicious activity by calling 911,” the initial alert stated.
The alert also added the suspect from Burlington and Governor escaped westbound on foot.
Meanwhile, the Iowa City Police Department issued a statement saying, “The Iowa City Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 Block of East Burlington Street at 1:29 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, 2025. Witnesses reported hearing shots fired and responding officers recovered evidence of gunfire.”
It added, “This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public associated with this incident. This incident remains under investigation and there is no further information available at this time.” The University of Iowa took to X and said, “No on-going threat to public. Remain vigilant. Resume normal activity.”
Iowa Hawkeyes versus Oregon Ducks game
The shooting incident occurred prior to the matchup between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Oregon Ducks. Iowa will look to bolster its College Football Playoff prospects while hosting Oregon at Kinnick Stadium.
The Hawkeyes are in contention for a playoff spot, having showcased a strong defense and achieving a 4-1 record in Big Ten play. Oregon, meanwhile, enters the game with one loss and minimal margin for error.
Shooting at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania
In related news, one person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting last month at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where gunfire broke out during outdoor homecoming celebrations attended by students and alumni at the historically Black institution.
A person in possession of a firearm was taken into custody, and authorities are looking into the possibility of multiple shooters but do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the campus, Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said during a brief news conference, according to reports.
