Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and husband killed in politically motivated shooting, Governor Tim Walz confirms

Some impersonator posing to be a police officer shot Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman, as well as their spouses, early Saturday morning in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. Gov Tim Walz confirmed that Rep. Hortman and her husband are no more, while Hoffman is recovering.

Democrat lawmakers from Minnesota, Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman, as well as their spouses, were shot by someone posing to be a police officer. According to FOX 9, the incident happened early Saturday morning in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, shaking the city.

Lawmakers shot in Minnesota: One dead, another in recovery

Former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in this politically motivated shooting, reports AP. Meanwhile, 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS reports that Hoffman and his wife were each shot five or six times. Multiple sources say Hoffman is in stable condition. Meanwhile, his wife’s condition is unknown. Sources say their dog was also shot. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has already confirmed the death of Rep. Hortman in his latest statement. 

This shooting comes nearly a day after one Democrat Senator, Alex Padilla, was handcuffed, shoved, and escorted out of a press conference being held by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem related to the Los Angeles protests against Donald Trump's immigration policies.

A post on X reads,"Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirms that both Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot an killed early this morning in a "politically motivated" attack. John Hoffman and his wife are both out of surgery and doctors remain optimistically hopeful for their recovery."

Has a suspect been identified?

A hunt for the shooter is currently underway, with police looking for the suspect who shot the Democrats and their spouses in cold blood. 

A Fox 9 report reads, “Police say they are looking for a suspect in multiple targeted shootings. The suspect is armed and dangerous. The suspect is a white man with brown hair wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants, and he may be impersonating law enforcement.”

Residents near the region are being advised by the police not to approach the assailant as the person could be armed and dangerous. They are instead being urged to dial 911. Moreover, police are also advising locals not to answer the door for any police officer unless it's two officers together. Moreover, they can also confirm the identity of the officers through 911 before answering the door.
