US Eggflation: Omelette cracks the wallet as egg prices soar 60% in March due to THIS reason

Egg prices in America: Egg prices in the US surged by 60% in March 2025, driven by a shortage of egg-laying hens. The USDA expects prices to rise another 20% this year, while efforts to balance supply through imports have had limited impact, leading to further price hikes.

Your egg consumption in America might be affected as prices rose by 60.4 per cent in March this year compared to the same period last year.

If you are heading to a grocery store, think twice, as the average price of a dozen eggs is now $6.22. The spike in prices comes amid an avian flu outbreak that has caused farmers to cull millions of birds, The Independent reported.

Egg prices have climbed steadily in recent months. In January, a dozen eggs cost $4.95, followed by $5.90 in February, a 19.2 per cent jump in just one month. According to the consumer price index, which provided the data as of March 2025, the cost of a dozen Grade A eggs has risen a whopping 84% since the start of 2024. The current price broke the previous record of January 2023, when the average cost was $4.82.

Reason for surge in egg prices in America

The rise in egg prices across the US is largely due to a dearth of egg-laying caused by the outbreak of the contagious avian flu.

According to the US Department of Agriculture protocol, each time avian flu is discovered in a flock, the entire flock must be culled to prevent the disease from spreading to other animals or birds on the farm. As a result, millions of birds are being killed each day, even as demand for eggs remains unchanged.

Republicans blame Joe Biden for egg price surge

Many Republicans accused former president Joe Biden of contributing to soaring egg prices through policies they claimed worsened inflation. Although egg prices did reach a peak during his presidency in January 2023, by the end of his administration, the cost had fallen to $3.65.

President Donald Trump ran a campaign underlining the cost of eggs and vowing to lower the prices.

In 2020, during Trump’s first term, a carton of one dozen eggs averaged $1.50.

Egg imports backfire as traders sell abroad for profit

Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) anticipates egg prices will continue to soar, up to 20 per cent in 2025.

An India Today report said that the USDA attempted to balance the supply of eggs by allowing more imports, with nearly 4 million dozen eggs coming to the country in February. However, they were so costly that some egg traders sold 7.6 million dozen eggs outside the country, further lowering the supply.

What can drive egg prices down

Farmers need time to rebuild their flocks for egg prices to decrease. This needs a decline in confirmed bird flu cases or a reduction in consumer demand for eggs.
