World Chess Championship 2024: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh was defeated by to defending champion Ding Liren of China in 12th game of World Chess Championship in Singapore. Following seven consecutive draws, the 18-year-old Indian challenger was leading by one point after he notched his second win of the match on Sunday.
However, Ding Liren's win on Monday changed the game and brought the two on an even platform. With just two games left in the 14-round classical format match, the two players are now tied at 6 points each. To win the title, one needs 1.5 points.
In case, there is a tie after 14 rounds there will be games under faster time control to decide who will be the ultimate winner. Two games are left to be played which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, after rest day on Tuesday. The match will go the distance (14 games) irrespective of what happens in the next game, which is scheduled for December 11. It is most likely that a tiebreaker will determine the winner.
Gukesh secured victory in the third game after the 32-year-old Ding Liren had won the opening game. Meanwhile, the second, and the fourth to 10th games ended in a tie.
Gukesh said, "In the second half, I had chances in many of the games. Today was obviously a bad game, but I wouldn't draw too much from it. Bad games happen. But if you look at the second half overall, I think we are both playing better than the first half," PTI reported.
He added, "Sometimes I perform very well after a loss. It's a very important 12th game. It's maybe the best game I have played in recent times.
The 12th game ended in 39 moves that witnessed Ding Liren's fine tactics. He sacrificed a rook to force matters after multiple errors by Gukesh paved the way for a huge advantage. Ding Liren secured the previous world championship title after a tough face-off with Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, where he came back from behind by a total three times.
