Bangladesh Polls Result 2026 Highlights: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a landmark victory in Friday’s parliamentary election, according to local TV reports, as ballot counting concluded in a crucial vote expected to bring political stability to the country, as reported by Reuters.

BNP vs Jamaat-e-Islami: A look at seats

BNP won 197 seats so far in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad (House of the Nation), surpassing the halfway mark needed for a simple majority, according to Jamuna and Somoy television channels.

Its main rival, the Islamist Jamaat‑e‑Islami, captured 63 seats, with party chief Shafiqur Rahman signalling concession even before BNP officially reached the majority threshold, AFP reported.

Rahman, 60, the leading candidate for prime minister, said he was certain that his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) — sidelined during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year authoritarian rule — would return to power in the South Asian country of 170 million people.

After former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee the country following the massive student-led anti-government protests and rising demands for parliamentary elections.

Voting took place on Thursday, with tens of millions of Bangladeshis participating in the country’s first election since the 2024 Gen Z‑led uprising that ousted long‑time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Voter turnout was expected to surpass the 42% recorded in the 2024 election, with local media reporting that over 60% of registered voters were likely to cast ballots.

The election featured more than 2,000 candidates, including many independents, and at least 50 political parties, setting a national record. Voting in one constituency was postponed following the death of a candidate.
