Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are separating after 18 years, following meaningful and difficult conversations
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, Wednesday announced that they are separating after 18 years of high-profile marriage.
Justin Trudeau, 51, is a descendant of one the most famous politicians of Canada. Sophie Trudeau, 48, is a former model and TV host. The couple were married in 2005. They have three children, 15-year-old Xavier, 14-year-old Ella-Grace and 9-year-old Hadrien.
"Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Trudeau said on Instagram.
“ As always, we ramain a closed family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything wqe have built and will continue to build.” Trudeau said.
A statement from the PMO said Trudeau and Sophie have signed a legal separation agreement, reported AP.
"They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward," Reuters reported quoting the PMO statement.
“They remain a close family, and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment,” AP reported quoting the statement from Trudeau's office. "The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week,” the report added.
The couple requisted that for the well being of their childern, people should respect their privacy.
Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire met as children when she was a classmate of his youngest brother, Michel, and they reconnected as adults when they co-hosted a 2003 charity gala, the AP report said.
Trudeau is the second prime minister to announce a separation while in office. Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, and mother, Margaret Trudeau, separated in 1979 and divorced in 1984 during the elder Trudeau's final year in the prime minister's office, the report added.
