Elon Musk to discuss Tesla's automated-driving technology in China visit, a first in 3 years: Report

Elon Musk's visit to China comes as Tesla nears the final stages before starting trial production of its revamped Model 3 sedan in Shanghai, which the billionaire has bet will compete more effectively with Chinese rivals.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk's private jet has landed in China's capital city Beijing on Tuesday, in what is being marked as the billionaire's first visit in three years to the east Asian country. Elon Musk is likely to discuss the automated-driving technology that Tesla is seeking to introduce in China with the Chinese Premiere Li Qiang.

Elon Musk is also slated to visit the tesla factory in Shanghai, Bloomberg reported.

China welcomed Elon Musk and said, "China welcomes Mr. Musk and other leaders from the business community to have a better understanding of China and promote mutually beneficial cooperation," Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Tuesday in Beijing.

“We would like to see foreign investors operating in China, exploring the Chinese market and sharing in the dividends of the development of China," she added.

Bloomberg had reported earlier in May 2023 that Tesla is nearing the final stages before starting trial production of its revamped Model 3 sedan in Shanghai, which Musk is betting will compete more effectively with Chinese rivals.

Tesla’s Shanghai plant accounted for more than half its global production in 2022, and the facility can now produce as many as 1.1 million cars a year. Shipments from Tesla’s Shanghai facility dropped in April, a sign consumers may be casting around for other electric vehicles as manufacturers across the country drop their prices.

It is to be noted that Elon Musk's Tesla contributed almost one-quarter of Shanghai’s total automotive production value in 2022. Local authorities in Shanghai has also pledged to continue to boost ties with Elon Musk and Tesla through autonomous driving and robot modules.

Ahead of Elon Musk's reported visit to China, the SpaceX CEO took to micro-blogging site Twitter and praised China's space technology. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that China space programme is "far more advanced" than most people realise. Musk was reacting to a tweet of Chris Hadfield, a former astronaut of the Canadian Space Agency, who quoted a news report to say that China will be able to set foot on the Moon by 2030.
