Google doodle celebrates the spirit of democracy on Italy's Republic day

To pay celebrate Italy's spirit on its Republic day, Google doodle resorted to a GIF of a waving Italian flag as its icon on Friday. The day marks the historic voting by the Italians to establish the Italian Republic n 1946.
The occasion was celebrated for the first time in 1947. However, the mandatory pomp and show and mesmerising military parade became a part of the celebration from 1948. It was only after 1949, the day was declared a national holiday.
On the public holiday, people mostly resort to join the celebration of Italy's republic day. The official ceremony is held in Rome every year. The annual ceremony includes a flag-raising ceremony, a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and a military parade.
For people to enjoy the rest of their day with friends and family, the Italian government also opens the gardens at the presidential Quirinale Palace for public.
The aerobatic demonstration of the Italian Air Force to form Italian flag in the sky on the day, often leaves people awestruck. The spectacular aerobatic formation is called as the Frecce Tricolori.
Other than the official Republic Day celebration in the country, a large number of speeches, parades, and concerts are also organised on the day. People also choose to enjoy the day at one of Italy’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites as it has a total of 51 UNESCO heritage sites.

The Google doodle showcasing an Italian flag is visible only for the Google users of Italy. Other than the country, the doodle will not appear for any other user.
Italy became a nation on March 17, 1861. Count Camillo Benso di Cavour is known as the father of Italian unification. In the first decade, Rome was ruled by the Papacy. Later it became part of the Kingdom of Italy on September 20th 1870, which makes it the final date of unification of the country.
In a landmark move for the country, 12 million Italians voted in a referendum on the monarchy for the birth of the Italian Republic on June 2, 1946.
