The United States' attack on Venezuela and President Donald Trump's announcement about capturing Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro and his wife dominated headlines worldwide.

Although global media outlets reported extensively on the developments, they differed sharply in how prominently the story was placed, how critically it was covered and the language used to describe the development.

On Saturday, 3 January, the US carried out strikes on Venezuela’s capital Caracas, as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, the Venezuelan government said in a statement.

Here's how some of the global media outlets reported on the attack:

1. BBC

The UK-based broadcaster has given top prominence to the developments regarding the US attack on Venezuela on its homepage, treating the story as a major breaking International event.

The top report is marked “LIVE,” signaling that the situation is evolving and is being closely tracked in real time by the news outlet.

Alongside the main story, the BBC has included links to explainers such as “What we know about Maduro's capture” and a reporter's account describing explosions and aircrafts over Caracas.

2. CNN

The American multinational news media company's homepage shows that CNN has given the developments dominant placement on its homepage, with a bold headline stating “US strikes Venezuela and captures Maduro.”

The framing is quite direct and assertive. Below that, several related articles have been linked, including one that says, “Bondi says Maduro will face ‘full wrath’ of US justice on American soil.”

Both CNN and BBC, which are western media outlets, used terms such as “strike” and “capture,” aiming to present the developments in a neutral and factual manner.

3. Reuters

The UK-based global news agency also gave the US-Venezuela developments prominent, center-stage placement.

However, unlike other news outlets, Al Jazeera's whole homepage is not dedicated to a single breaking story. The placement of its homepage is quite diverse and consists of stories from all over the world.
