Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday from the premises of Islamabad High Court, where he was present during the hearing of one of his cases. The videos emerging from his arrest where the leader can be seen taken to police vehicle with hundreds of police personnel surrounding the leader.
The 72-year-old chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was arrested by agents from the country's anti-corruption body, the National Accountability Bureau, his party spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry claimed.
As the situation around the area became tense, a scuffle broke out between the police and supporters of Imran Khan. The PTI spokesperson claimed that the lawyer of Imran Khan and many workers of the party are injured in the scuffle. The Islamabad police decided to impose restrictions under Section 144 in the city.
According to officials from the anti-corruption body, Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau issued arrest warrants for Imran Khan last week in a different corruption case. The former Prime Minister did not obtain bail, which is legal protection against arrest in the country. Imran Khan is expected to be taken to an anti-graft tribunal on Tuesday for questioning.
Imran Khan had traveled from Lahore, where he lives, to Islamabad to appear before the Islamabad High Court in relation to multiple corruption cases filed against him. He has alleged that these cases, which also involve terrorism charges, are part of a larger conspiracy by the government led by Shehbaz Sharif to undermine his credibility. Imran Khan had been a renowned cricketer before entering politics.
The authorities in Islamabad have made some attempts in the past to arrest the leader, but Imran Khan enjoys huge support in Pakistan and the situation became tense as thousands of his supporters came on the road to protest against his arrest. Recently, Imran Khan also survived an assassination attempt, after which the security of the leader was increased.
