Imran Khan's arrest: YouTube, Twitter, Facebook suspended in parts of Pakistan amid protests
Following the arrest PTI activists resorted to stone pelting on houses, offices and vehicles. Burning of banners and tyres and blocking roads were also reported.
PremiumSocial media platforms such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook were suspended in various parts of Pakistan on Tuesday night amid protests. Police has clashed repeatedly with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party activists following former Prime Minister Imran Khan's arrest earlier in the day.
Protesters blocked roads, indulged in arson and even stormed military areas on Tuesday evening, with police firing tear gas and water cannons in retaliation. Against this backdrop, several local media channels said that social media restrictions had been imposed. Meanwhile netblocks indicated that the three websites had also been restricted across the country.
The situation has also prompted an outcry from human rights groups, with Amnesty International asserting that the ban “restricts people’s access to information and freedom of expression".

Protesters set fire to at least three buildings across the country, while police said dozens of supporters have been arrested. Khan’s party reported at least four people were killed and 20 injured in separate clashes. Amid the protests, mobile broadband services were suspended on the orders of the interior ministry, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, while complaints of slow internet service spread on social media.
