NEW DELHI : India is in talks with a number of developing countries to extend its digital public infrastructure (DPI) partnerships, according to persons aware of the matter.

Earlier this month, India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Armenia, Sierra Leone, Suriname, and Antigua and Barbuda on sharing its ‘India Stack’ with them.

India Stack broadly refers to digital solutions implemented at population scale to deliver social benefits. These agreements were signed at the Global Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Conference, which was held on the sidelines of a G20 working group on the digital economy.

According to the persons cited above, India is now in talks with several countries in the global South, including in Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia, to extend these DPI partnerships.

Digital public infrastructure has become a key facet of India’s diplomatic outreach to the developing world. Key elements of India’s DPI offerings are its UPI digital payments interface, the Aadhar bio-metric digital identity system and data management systems like DigiLocker.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a pitch for the widespread adoption of India’s DPI solutions during the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022.
