NEW DELHI : India on Sunday “strongly condemned" what it called the “targeted killing" of a member of the minority Sikh community member in Peshawar. This came after an incident of vandalism and discretion of a Sikh shrine in Nankana Sahib on Friday and another unresolved incident of the abduction, forced conversion and marriage of a Sikh girl, Jagjit Kaur, the Indian foreign ministry said.

“India calls upon the Government of Pakistan to stop prevaricating and take immediate action to apprehend and give exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of these heinous acts. The Government of Pakistan should act in defence of their own minorities instead of preaching sermons about it to other countries," the foreign ministry statement said. This was against the backdrop of Pakistan expressing concerns over the state of Muslims in India.

The Sikh killed on Sunday was a 25-year-old in Peshawar, according to Indian and local media reports. Ravinder Singh was the brother of Public News anchor Harmeet Singh and he was shot dead in Peshawar by an unidentified man, the news reports said.

On Friday, India had condemned the desecration of the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, built to mark the birthplace of the founder of Sikhism – Guru Nanak.
