Dubai: President Hassan Rouhani, during a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday, promised further investigation into the downing of an Ukrainian passenger plane, state news agency IRNA reported.

"Iran welcomes any international cooperation in the framework of international regulations to shed more light on the incident," Rouhani said, promising further investigation into the crash that Tehran said was caused by its air defences "unintentionally". Trudeau said he asked Rouhani to work with Canada and international community to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Trudeau said that he also told Rouhani that Canada wants 'full clarity' on the 'horrific tragedy'.

Iran and Canada cut diplomatic ties in 2012.
