Japan election result Highlights: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has crossed the threshold of two-thirds of the lower house of parliament. While such a result was already predicted, super-majority of 310 seats allows Takaichi's coalition to override upper house, where it lacks a majority, reported national broadcaster NHK citing the official count.
George Edward Glass, the US ambassador to Japan, congratulated Takaichi on what he called an "impressive win" and said he looked forward to deepening ties with her government.
Takaichi announced the nation's first mid-winter election in 36 years to seek a public mandate soon after winning her party's leadership race last October.
Her decision was widely seen as a gamble, as her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) had lost its majority in both houses of parliament and its long-standing coalition with the Komeito party had fallen apart.

Japan’s national broadcaster NHK reported that the official vote count has now pushed the LDP past the two-thirds mark in the lower house of parliament.
While the outcome had been widely expected, securing a super-majority of 310 seats gives Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s coalition the power to override the upper house, where it does not have a majority.
"This election involved major policy shifts — particularly a major shift in economic and fiscal policy, as well as strengthening security policy," Reuters quoted Takaichi as saying in a television interview as the results rolled in.
“These are policies that have drawn a great deal of opposition ... If we have received the public's support, then we truly must tackle these issues with all our strength,” she added.
