Massive rule change in cricket: ICC reshapes on-field umpires’ role, starting from WTC final between India, Australia
The ICC rule change will take effect from the upcoming WTC final in London, scheduled to be played between India and Australia from June 7 to 11.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a significant rule change to the playing conditions (PCs) of international games. The widely-debated soft signal rule, which required the on-field umpire to make a decision before referring it to the third umpire, will be removed and replaced with a final decision by the third umpire based on video evidence.
The change is set to come into effect from next month's World Test Championship (WTC) final in London between India and Australia between June 7 and 11.
The ICC Cricket Committee, headed by Sourav Ganguly, approved the rule change, which has been conveyed to both WTC finalists. In addition to this, floodlights can be used during the game if natural light is poor, and the game will have a reserve day (sixth) if necessary.
The soft signal rule has been a subject of controversy, with many cricket experts calling for its abolition. As per the ICC regulations, a "soft signal" refers to the initial on-field decision made by the umpire at the bowler's end, which is communicated visually to the third umpire before the umpire review is initiated.

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), raised the matter of the soft signal rule at an ICC forum in 2021, where he also expressed his opinion on the matter, Cricbuzz reported. Now, the rule change has been made, and it means that the third umpire will have the final say on doubtful catches.
The new rule change means that the third umpire will have the final say on all decisions, making the process fairer and removing any controversies around the soft signal.
