Meta mulls launch of microblogging site, may compete with Twitter by June-end
The operations of the new site, codenamed Barcelona, will be linked to Instagram. A post on the site can reportedly have up to 500 characters.
Mark Zuckerberg-led Meta may soon launch its own microblogging site linked to Instagram. Reports citing sources indicated that the social media giant would have a platform competing with Twitter by the end of June. Codenamed Barcelona, it is currently being being alpha-tested and checked for bugs.
According to an ANI report citing sources, a post on the site can have up to 500 characters. Users will also be able to switch easily between Instagram and the new microblogging site. Hashtags - a prominent feature on rival Twitter - may also be used in the new site.
The development comes Twitter is struggling to retain users across the board and new CEO Linda Yaccarino is yet to take over the reigns.

Last month a Business Insider report indicated that Barcelona will be a decentralized text-based social network. A prototype indicated that the proposed tagline would be "Instagram for your thoughts.
As per a March report from Moneycontrol, users will be able to log on to the new site via their Instagram handles. Barcelona is likely to compete with a barrage of Twitter replacements that have emerged in recent years - from Mastodon to Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's Bluesky.
Meanwhile Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday evening announced Meta Quest 3, its next-generation virtual and mixed reality headset, which will be launched later this year. The company also announced on Thursday that its employees will be required to work in the office three days a week starting September 5 in its remote work policy.
