NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has posted a message of encouragement for his British counterpart Boris Johnson shortly after the latter revealed he had exhibited symptoms of Coronavirus infection.

“Dear PM @BorisJohnson, You’re a fighter and you will overcome this challenge as well. Prayers for your good health and best wishes in ensuring a healthy UK," Modi said in his post.

Earlier on Friday, Johnson in a Twitter post and video clip said that he had developed “mild symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.

I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.

Together we will beat this. #StayHomeSaveLives."

Johnson is the second high profile Briton to develop symptoms of the disease after Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, earlier this week. Spain and Italy are main hotspots for Covid-19 in Europe with the UK not far behind.

German chancellor Angela Merkel had gone into self isolation earlier this month after a doctor she interacted with tested positive for Covid-19, news reports said. She herself had later tested negative, news reports said.

The number of infections due to SARS-CoV2 which surfaced first in China in December is now close to the 550,000 mark with almost 25,000 deaths in 176 countries and regions.
