A major accident was averted after an off-duty pilot was stopped from trying to crash an Alaska Airlines flight bound to San Francisco. The pilot inside the flight desk tried to disable the aircraft engines, reported Reuters.

Later, Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 operated by Horizon Air from Everett, Washington, was diverted to Portland, Oregon on Sunday. All passengers on board reached to their destination by travelling on a later flight, said Alaska Airlines.

In a notice sent by the Federal Aviation Administration, the individual pilot sought to disable the engines on the Embraer 175 regional jet by deploying the fire suppression system. It also said that the crew was able to subdue the individual and remove him from the flight deck. The notice made it clear that the engine was never disabled, reported news agency Reuters.

The main culprit, the 44-year-old man, Joseph David Emerson, was charged on 83 counts of attempted murder and endangering an airplane, according to Multnomah County Sheriff's Office booking information.

Emersion is a certified pilot who received a medical clearance last month, according to FAA pilot database.

"I’ll just give you a heads-up. We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit," the pilot told FAA air traffic control, according to audio posted by LiveATC. “It doesn’t sound like he’s causing any issue at the back. I think he’s subdued... We want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked.”

In a separate notice, the FAA made it clear that the incident is in anyway not connected to the current world events.

The incident "is not connected in any way, shape or form to current world events" but said it is "always good practice to maintain vigilance." The airline also mentioned that it is a normal practice for off-duty pilots to sit in jump seats to return home or to a future flight assignment.
