Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney where he is set to address the members of the Indian diaspora at a community event shortly. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is also with him.
PM Modi arrived in Sydney on Monday as a guest of the Australian government and the visit builds on the Australia-India Annual Leaders' Summit in New Delhi in March and discussions at the G7 Summit and Quad Leaders' meeting in Hiroshima, Japan over the weekend.
Thousands of expatriate Indians have gathered at Australia's largest entertainment and sporting arena in Sydney to welcome PM Modi, who is visiting the country after a gap of nine years. He last visited Australia in 2014.
At the meet, PM Modi witnessed a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora in Sydney. During the PM's entrance, people shouted in joy while traditoinal musical instruments played and PM Modi and PM Albanese waved at the large crowd.
"The last time I saw someone on this stage was Bruce Springsteen and he did not get the welcome that Prime Minister Modi has got. Prime Minister Modi is the boss," said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the community event in Sydney.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese arrived at the venue in Sydney on Tuesday to attend a special community event to celebrate the country's dynamic, diverse Indian diaspora, amid immense enthusiasm among the community members.
'Welcome Modi' spelt by a recreational aircraft's contrails posed a mesmerising sight in the clear blue sky over Sydney ahead of the community event organised to greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Australia.
Modi, who is visiting Australia as a guest of the Australian Government, will address the community members at the event at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena.
"Immense enthusiasm in Sydney for the community programme, which begins soon…" the prime minister's office tweeted.
The event's organisers, the Indian Australian Diaspora Foundation (IADF), are expecting a crowd of more than 20,000.
The Indian Prime Minister was welcomed with traditional vedic chants.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2016 census, 619,164 people in Australia declared that they were of ethnic Indian ancestry. This comprises 2.8 per cent of the Australian population. Among those, 592,000 were born in India. Prime Minister Modi last visited Australia in 2014.
Modi and Albanese will have a bilateral meeting on Wednesday.
