Britain's Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and her mother dodged multiple near collisions while escaping 'highly aggressive paparazzi', a spokesperson for the prince said on Wednesday. The paparazzi photographers chased the couple for nearly two hours and even threatened the life of pedestrians on the roads of New York.
"Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi," the spokesperson said in a statement.
"This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers," the statement added.
The incident happened when the couple was returning from an award ceremony in New York organised by the Ms. Foundation for Women where Meghan Markle was awarded for her work. Many pictures which surfaced on social media show Harry, Meghan, and her mother, Doria Ragland, in a taxi.
In 2020, Harry and Meghan made the decision to relinquish their royal duties and relocate to the United States. One of the factors contributing to their choice was the significant media persecution they endured, as they expressed it.
Prince Harry has consistently voiced his frustration regarding the invasion of privacy by the press, holding them accountable for the tragic demise of his mother, Princess Diana. She tragically lost her life in a car accident while trying to evade pursuing paparazzi in Paris, an incident that the prince believes was a direct consequence of press intrusion.
