A professor at the University of Texas failed his entire class after ChatGPT told him that the assignments had been done using artificial intelligence. The professor believed that ChatGPT could detect AI-generated content and used it to determine whether the students had used artificial intelligence to complete their assignments. The University of Texas has now placed the diplomas of several students on hold, pending a full-scale investigation.
The matter came to light following a Reddit post by a user with the username DearKick. The unnamed professor had written to his students ahead of the announcement of exam results to inform them of his unorthodox approach to grading.
In an email to the students, the professor explained his approach for checking if their assignments were made using ChatGPT, he wrote, “In Grading your last three assignments I have opened my own account for Chat GTP. I copy and paste your responses in this account and Chat GTP will tell me if the program generated the content. I put everyone's last three assignments through two separate times and if they were both claimed by Chat GTP you received a 0 (sic)”.
However, the professor failed to realize that ChatGPT isn't capable of detecting any AI-generated content or even content written by itself. Moreover, Generative AI-based chatbots are also prone to ‘hallucinating’ meaning they can make stuff up that is simply not true.
The user DearKick posted an update on Reddit to inform that diplomas of more than half the class have been put on hold. However, the University will not bar anyone from graduating because their diplomas are on hold. The University of Texas has already cleared one student of the plagiarism charges, and their diploma will soon be released.
Interestingly, it seems like the professor wasn't totally wrong. At least 2 students have come forward and told the university that they used ChatGPT for completing their assignments during the course of the semester.
