Sudha Murty, author and philanthropist, founder of Infosys Foundation, wife to Infosys founder Nayaran Murthy, and now mother-in-law to Prime Minister of United Kingdom Rishi Sunak, faced an awkward situation at the London airport when immigrations officers refused to believe her address in the capital city was in fact- 10 Downing Street!
Recently, the author, who is also known for her impeccable sense of humour, joined comedian Kapil Sharma on his show. At the show she narrated a unique problem Murty faces- most people refuse to believe that she is the mother of UK's first lady Akshata Murty and especially the mother-in-law of UK's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The author attributed this to simple looks being immensely deceptive.
At the show, Sudha Murty narrates that an immigration officer in UK refused to believe her residential address when she wrote in the form ’10 Downing Street’ — the official residence and office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
“Once when I had gone, they asked me my residential address. ‘Where are you staying in London?’ My elder sister was with me and I thought should I write ’10 Downing Street’. My son also lives there (in UK), but I didn’t remember his complete address. But I finally wrote 10 Downing Street. That fellow (the immigration officer) looked at me and said, ‘Are you joking?!’
“I told him ‘nahi, sachchi bolti hu’ (No, I am telling you the truth). He thought I was joking. No one believes that I, a 72 year old, simple lady, can be the mother-in-law of the Prime Minister,” she said on the show.
On the episode, she was joined by producer Guneet Monga, who recently won an Oscar and actor Raveena Tandon, who was awarded the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri. In April, Sudha Murty was conferred the Padma Bhushan at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Last moth, Murty had stated that her daughter, Akshata Murty, “made her husband a Prime Minister.” Rishi Sunak's quick ascension to power has been highlighted before but his mother-in-law claims it was her daughter who made that possible.
In a viral video, Sudha was heard saying: "I made my husband a businessman. My daughter made her husband Prime Minister of the UK." "The reason is the glory of the wife. See how a wife can change a husband. But I could not change my husband. I made my husband a businessman, and my daughter made her husband a Prime Minister," said Sudha Murty in an Instagram post.
