Turkey mass shooting in Tarsus leaves six dead and eight wounded; police launch manhunt for suspect

A gunman killed at least six people and injured eight others in a series of attacks across the city of Tarsus in southern Turkey on Monday (May 18), prompting a large-scale manhunt involving police, helicopters and drones, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

Authorities believe the attacker moved through multiple locations during the rampage before fleeing the scene. The suspect remains at large.

Erdogan confirms casualties, offers condolences

President Erdogan confirmed the death toll in a televised statement following a cabinet meeting.

He said six people were killed and eight others wounded, expressing condolences for the victims but providing limited operational details about the ongoing investigation.

Suspect identified amid ongoing manhunt

Turkish media outlets, including state-run Anadolu Agency, identified the suspect as a 37-year-old man, reportedly named Metin O.

According to reports, the suspect is believed to have killed his ex-wife before launching a broader shooting spree across multiple locations in Tarsus, in Mersin province.

Security forces are continuing search operations across the region.

Multiple locations targeted in attack

The gunman is believed to have opened fire in several separate incidents.

Reports suggest he first shot and killed the owner and an employee at a restaurant before fleeing the area. He later allegedly killed additional victims, including a shepherd near his animals and a truck driver, as well as other individuals in different parts of the city.

Authorities say the attacks appeared coordinated as the suspect moved between locations.

Security forces launch large-scale search operation

Police units supported by helicopters and drones have been deployed across Tarsus and surrounding areas to locate the suspect.

Roads have reportedly been monitored and checkpoints established as authorities attempt to contain the situation.

The shooter is believed to still be armed.

The attack comes amid growing concerns over gun violence in Turkey, following several deadly shootings in recent months.

Officials have not yet indicated whether the latest incident is linked to any broader pattern or organization.
