Elon Musk derided Hungarian-American businessman and philanthropist George Soros in a tweet on Thursday. Musk said it would be unfair to X-Men villain Magneto to compare him to George Soros. Musk had recently said that George Soros reminds him of the popular X-men villain. Musk went on to explain his reasons for not liking Soros, he claims Soros ‘hates humanity’ and he wants to erode the very fabric of society.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Musk wrote, ‘Soros reminds me of Magneto’. Adding to his remarks on Thursday, Musk wrote, “I’d like apologize for this post..It was really unfair to Magneto”
Replying to a comment defending Soros owing to his Holocaust roots and ‘good intentions’, Musk said, “You assume they are good intentions. They are not. He wants to erode the very fabric of civilization. Soros hates humanity”
Musk has been known for voicing his political opinions on Twitter. Some of his tweets have also landed him in trouble with the public and regulators. The billionaire has defended his decision to share his opinions publicly even if stakeholders in his companies might not agree with him. Speaking to CNBC, Musk said, “I'll say what I want to say and if the consequence of that is losing money then so be it"
A 2018 tweet by Musk had landed him in trouble with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Musk had claimed he will take secured enough funding to take Tesla private at $420 per share. However, Tesla shareholders sued Musk when the deal never materialized. Eventually, Musk had to settle the lawsuit by $20 million and the condition that his Tesla-related tweets will be approved by a lawyer before he posts them.
Musk also filed an appeal in a US court claiming the 2018 fraud settlement with the SEC violated his free speech rights.
