Literature festivals are meant to be platforms for free expression
Quibbles over sponsorship should not get in the way of the valuable exchange of views they foster
Over the weekend, writers Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad were to speak at the Tata Literature Festival in Mumbai, about Chomsky’s new book on the climate crisis and people’s resistance movements. Left-leaning activists were outraged that Chomsky would speak at a corporate-sponsored festival. They urged Chomsky and Prashad to boycott the festival.
