India lifted about 415 million people out of multidimensional poverty between 2005-06 and 2019-21, according to the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), an initiative of UNDP and Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative. While India lags way behind China on the poverty headcount in the report, the projected pace of poverty reduction appears remarkably fast by any yardstick.
