As of now, a lot of manager's time is spent on dull tasks such as filling forms, updating information and approving workflows

Artificial intelligence (AI) could shake up the workplace sooner than we think. A report by research firm Gartner predicts that 69% of the routine work managers do will be taken over by AI and other new technologies by 2024. This would happen with the help of virtual personal assistants and chatbots. For managers, this could prove either unnerving or liberating. A lot of their time is spent on dull tasks such as updating information and approving workflows. If these are automated, some may find themselves at a loose end. Good managers, though, will be glad to be relieved of the drudgery so that they get time for productive things like studying the market and plotting strategy.

Automation will also lift barriers faced by workers with disabilities. This could enhance work opportunities for them. Gartner expects their numbers in employment to triple by 2023. Undeniably, job losses could also ensue. Companies might not need as many employees. In India, where new jobs are failing to keep pace with the swarms entering the workforce, AI adoption may encounter resistance. How this turns out is largely unknown, but it’s best to be prepared.
