Whatever form the new government takes, the Afghan people face protracted turmoil
The Taliban are consolidating control of Afghanistan, 20 years after US-led forces ousted them from power. The return of the Islamist fundamentalist group has been brewing for years, but its advance accelerated rapidly after the US set a deadline of Aug. 31 to pull out troops and began withdrawing air support for the now-fallen Afghan government’s forces. President Biden has now said US troops will stay as long as needed to evacuate Americans.
