New Delhi: The last rites of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former finance minister Arun Jaitley will be performed on Sunday. The former union minister passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after a prolonged illness.

The cremation will take place on Sunday at New Delhi's Nigambodh Ghat.

"The mortal remains will be taken to the BJP headquarters on Sunday morning and cremation would be performed in the afternoon," said J.P. Nadda, BJP's working president.

Earlier, President Ram Nath Kovind visited the residence of Arun Jaitley to express condolences.

"I am deeply pained at the sad demise of my brother and my mentor. He was always available for all of us with his sage advice. It is a great personal loss for me and my family," said union minister Piyush Goyal.

The entire BJP leadership was present at the residence of Jaitley, including defence minister Rajnath Singh, home minister and BJP president Amit Shah, BJP's working president JP Nadda and most of the Union ministers.

"BJP has lost one of its diamonds, Arun Jaitley. An orator par excellence, he was a master of articulation. We have lost many leaders in one year, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Ananth Kumar, Manohar Parrikar, Sushma Swara and now Arun Jaitley. We deeply mourn his death," said union minister Prakash Javadekar.
