NEW DELHI:Jyotiraditya Scindia, former union minister and one of the most prominent young faces of Congress party, tendered his resignation from party's primary membership amidst high political drama in his home state of Madhya Pradesh.

Scindia's resignation comes as a jolt to the Congress party whose family's association with it dates back to decades as his father Madhav Rao Scindia too served as a union minister under party's regime. Jyotiraditya Scindia, three time Lok Sabha MP, played a key role in Madhya Pradesh elections in 2018 which the party won.

"Having been a primary member of the Congress party for last 18 years, it is now time for me to move on. I am tendering my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress and as you well know, this path has been drawing out over the last year," Scindia said in his resignation letter dated 9 March.

"To reflect and realise the aspirations of my people and my workers I believe that it is best that I now look forward to a fresh start," he added.

According to a PTI report, the disgruntled Congress met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday amid indications that he might join hands with the BJP to topple the Madhya Pradesh government.

Scindia first met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and then the two leaders met Modi at the prime minister's residence, the report added.

According to people aware of developments over 14 Congress MLAs have tendered their resignation to Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon. The development could potentially upset stability of Kamal Nath led government in the state.

Congress has 114 MLAs in the 230-member MP legislative Assembly and draws support from four independents, two Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs, and one MLA from the Samajwadi Party (SP). The BJP is the largest opposition party with 107 legislators. Two seats are vacant.

In the backdrop of his resignation letter, Congress' general secretary incharge of organisation, K C Venugopal said in a statement that its chief Sonia Gandhi has now approved his expulsion from Congress with "immediate effect for anti-party activities".

Scindia's resignation comes in the backdrop of over a dozen of party MLAs from Madhya Pradesh revolting against chief minister Kamal Nath including six state ministers many of whom are now stationed at a resort near Bengaluru.

His resignation is also just days ahead of the last day of filing of nominations for Rajya Sabha elections as three seats from Madhya Pradesh are going to polls.
