Former CBI joint director joins Jana Sena in AP

HYDERABAD : In a surprise turn of events, former joint director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) V. V. Lakshminarayana joined the Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by actor-turned-politician Pawan Kallyan, in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. It was earlier reported that the former CBI official would join the ruling Telugu Desam party.
Lakshminarayana was earlier also part of the ongoing CBI investigation into the alleged disproportionate assets case against the YSR Congress Party (YSR) president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He had taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Police Service (IPS) last year. Even until weeks ago, it was widely speculated that he would join the TDP.
“To be fair he never really agreed to us and we never pursued it aggressively. He is not an election winner to be honest and would require an easy seat," opined a TDP leader, who did not want to be quoted. Lakshminarayana met Kalyan and formally joined the JSP on Sunday. Apart from him, other big names who have joined Kalyan recently include former vice president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee and former AP assembly speaker Nadendla Manohar.
It was also speculated earlier that the former CBI official would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after pictures of him attending a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) event in Telangana were circulated on the internet. However he was quick to dismiss that.
Other than the Jagan Mohan Reddy case, Lakshminarayana also probed into the Obulapuram mining case, in which the infamous brothers (Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brother) were accused of illegal mining and subsequently arrested.
In the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections in AP, the JSP has joined hands with the Communist party of India, Communist party of India (Marxist) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in a pre-poll alliance. Kalyan, who hails from the numerically strong Kapu community, especially in the East and West Godavari districts, is expected to win or at least impact the results in those two districts.
