NEW DELHI : Four-time member of the Delhi legislative assembly from Congress, Parlad Singh Sawhney joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday.

Sawhney (68) who was a legislator from Chandni Chowk has joined the AAP weeks after Alka Lamba, who won from Chandni Chowk in 2015, quit the party and joined the Congress. Sawhney is the second leader from Congress to join the AAP in the last month.

He joined the party in the presence of AAP national convener and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh.

"I have not joined the party for a ticket. I have seen the work of the AAP and Arvind Kejriwal. The party and the work that has been done by giving free electricity, health, education is being welcomed among the public," Sawhney, who was a close aide of former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, said while joining the party.

Sawhney represented Chandni Chowk assembly segment until 2015 when he lost the constituency to Lamba.

"AAP started as a movement and there were times when after coming to power parties lost their vision but that is not the case with AAP. We have done revolutionary work since assuming office," Kejriwal said, welcoming Sawhney to the party.

Last month, former Congress Jharkhand unit chief Ajoy Kumar joined the AAP. He has since been appointed as the chief spokesperson of the party.

The term of the Delhi assembly ends in February. The election is seeing a three cornered contest between the AAP, Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
