A Goa court has issued a notice to AAP MP Sanjay Singh in a ₹100 crore defamation suit filed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's wife. Sulakshana Sawant alleged that Singh linked her to a cash-for-jobs scam and sought an apology. Singh is supposed to respond to the court notice by January 10, 2025.
Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, recently alleged that Sulakshana, wife of CM Pramod Sawant, is involved in a cash-for-jobs scam.
Following the incident, Sulakshana Sawant filed a complaint in the civil court at Bicholim in north Goa. The ad-hoc civil judge heard the suit and issued a notice to Sanjay Singh, returnable on January 10, 2025.
Speaking about the allegation, the Goa CM had earlier said, "I have started the process of filing a defamation case against AAP leaders in Delhi and Goa. My wife will file another defamation case against them."
Sulakshana Sawant requested the court through her lawyers to direct Singh to publish an apology clarifying that the defamatory video/article and interview are false and not based on facts, and tender an unconditional apology.
The complainant also urged the court to restrain Singh from making any public statements maligning her by injunction on social media or other platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
Many aspirants had lodged complaints across Goa alleging they were forced to pay lakhs of rupees to some persons who promised to facilitate jobs in the Goa government.
The chief minister had said that the state police were conducting a transparent investigation into the alleged cash-for-jobs scam. "I initiated action against the accused involved in the cash-for-jobs scam. The government has given a free hand to police for free-and-fair investigation in the matter," Sawant said.
He accused the Opposition of dragging him and his family into the scam without any proof, as they were left with no issue.
"My wife is in politics but she is not part of the government," he added.
