The chief of the women’s wing of the Congress, Sushmita Dev, on Thursday said that the party will scrap the law criminalizing the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims if it was voted to power at the centre.
The politically significant remark, which comes just a few months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, drew criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the Congress of trying to appease the minority community with an eye on votes.
“We oppose that law because it is a weapon that Narendra Modiji has prepared to put Muslim men in jail and make them stand in police stations. I promise you, when the Congress government comes in 2019, we will scrap this triple talaq law,” Dev said at an event organized by the party’s minority department.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi also attended the event.
“What kind of mentality is this? This is only to appease. The people of this country are watching. Neither Muslim women nor the people of this country will forgive Rahul Gandhi for this kind of perverted mentality,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.
