New Delhi: In a first, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was on Wednesday appointed general secretary, Uttar Pradesh East. This is the first time that Vadra is officially holding a post in the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

The move is significant because till now, Vadra worked behind the scenes as a key strategist for the party, particularly in Uttar Pradesh where she closely handled Lok Sabha seats of both Rahul Gandhi (Amethi) and mother Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli).

“Congress president has also appointed Smt. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC general secretary of Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February, 2019," a release by the party said.

Additionally, Rahul Gandhi also appointed K.C. Venugopal as general secretary in charge of organisation, replacing now Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. Senior Madhya Pradesh leader Jyotiraditya Scindhia was appointed incharge, Uttar Pradesh West.
