BENGALURU : Channabasappa Satyappa Shivalli, Karnataka’s minister for Municipal Administration and Local Bodies died on Friday after he suffered a heart attack. He was 57.

Shivalli, a legislator from Kundagol in Dharwad district, collapsed while talking to locals in the district. He was taken to the hospital where he breathed his last.

“My condolences to the family and supporters of Karnataka Minister Shri CS Shivalli. Shri Shivalli will be remembered for his service to Karnataka. May his soul rest in peace," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.

Shivalli had been aiding rescue efforts in Dharwad district where a building collapsed and had so far claimed the lives of 15 people, injuring several more. Rescue efforts are still on as more people are suspected to be trapped under the debris.

“I am sorry to hear about the passing away of Shri C.S. Shivalli Ji. I express my deepest condolences to his family, friends and followers. The party has lost a family member. We will miss him," Congress president Rahul Gandhi wrote on his Facebook page.

“Shocked to hear the sudden demise of our minister Sri CS Shivalli. A truly grassroots, son of the soil politician who served the people with great simplicity and commitment. A great loss for the Congress and for the Dharwad region," Dinesh Gundu Rao, the state Congress president wrote on Twitter.

A close aide of former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Shivalli hailed from the Kuruba community. The death of Shivalli also brings down the coalition strength to 116 (excluding the speaker) in the 224 seater house. The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) and Congress coalition received a setback after its legislator, Umesh Jadhav defected to the BJP and has been named as their candidate from Kalaburagi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. in the 224 seater house. The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) and Congress coalition received a setback after its legislator, Umesh Jadhav defected to the BJP and has been named as their candidate from Kalaburagi in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress has issued notices to four of its legislators including Jadhav. Three others disgruntled legislators have shown little interest in returning to the party fold, adding to the uncertainty of the H.D.Kumaraswamy led government, whose stability has been in question ever since they came together in May last year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been hoping to cash in on the discord between the alliance partner and dissent within the Congress party to help the saffron outfit form the government. Senior leaders of the BJP have said that the coalition will fall apart after the Lok Sabha polls, scheduled to be commence in the second week of April.
