New Delhi: A day after controversial comments from Samajwadi Party lawmaker Azam Khan, members of Lok Sabha, cutting across party lines, demanded “exemplary action" against him.
Khan made objectionable remarks against Rama Devi, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) when she was chairing the proceedings of the House. His remarks led to an uproar in the Lok Sabha and were later expunged.
Amidst a heated uproar for a second day on the issue, Lok Sabha members on Friday urged Speaker Om Birla to take strictest action against Khan so no one disrespects a member in the House, particularly a woman MP.
“Whatever happened yesterday was not just shameful but also unpardonable. You are the leader of the House and we empower you to take whatever decision you want. Exemplary action should be taken to ensure that no such incident gets repeated," said Bhratuhari Mahtab, senior leader of Biju Janta Dal.
Taking on record everyone’s observations, Birla told the House that he would soon hold a meeting of leaders of all parties to decide the next course of action.
