Yediyurappa had earlier stated that a total of 13 legislators would be sworn in on Thursday
Out of the 13, 10 are expected to be reserved for new entrants who helped the BJP come to power
Several legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remain on the edge ahead of Thursday’s cabinet expansion that threatens to intensify simmering dissent within the six-month-old B.S. Yediyurappa government in Karnataka.
Scheduled to be held on Thursday morning, uncertainty continues to loom over a tentative list of those believed to be inducted to the cabinet. Though Yediyurappa had earlier stated that a total of 13 legislators would be sworn in on Thursday, the dynamics appear to have changed within the party.
“It will be clear in the evening when all information comes in from Delhi. Centre will clear doubts on how many (will take oath)," Yediyurappa said, sounding unsure of the numbers himself.
Out of the 13, 10 are expected to be reserved for new entrants who helped the BJP come to power while the remaining would be given to old timers.
“Until the oath taking ceremony in Raj Bhavan, anything can happen," a senior office bearer of the BJP’s central leadership said, requesting not to be named.
R. Ashok, a cabinet minister and senior Karnataka BJP leader, on Wednesday said that they are yet to receive a final list.
Senior leaders sound sure only of the 10 new legislators who will be inducted to the ministry, even though there is no official confirmation stating the same.
The main contention of most legislators is the inclusion of C.P. Yogeshwar, who was defeated in the 2018 assembly polls he contested against former chief minister H. D. Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) in Channapatna.
Though most of the dissidents have tried not to criticise Yediyurappa, the latter has found it difficult to manage expectations and is likely to carve out more posts to placate them or increase allocations to calm tempers and contain growing displeasure within his government.
