Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the people of Karnataka were paying a heavy price for the “small mistake" in the May assembly elections that brought the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) to power in the state.

Non-National Democratic Alliance political parties found itself under attack as Modi as well as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah visited different parts of south India on Wednesday to address public meetings.

While Modi visited Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for campaigning, Shah was in Telangana addressing party workers and the public.

“You have seen the problem with a majboor (weak) sarkar. I have come here to tell you that such a small mistake has cost Karnataka so much," Modi told a rally in Kalaburagi district, about 630 km from Bengaluru. He asked the electorate to bring back the majority government at the Centre in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Modi said the coalition partners have “backstabbed" farmers and fooled them for votes in the name of farm loan waiver, which Modi said is yet to be implemented. “I have already given the first instalment of farmers’ income but those who are only interested in politics think that if the money is deposited in farmers’ accounts directly, the community will chant Modi’s name," the prime minister said.

“This is why the Congress and the remote-controlled chief minister have not given us any details because of which we have not been able to release funds for the state," Modi said, alleging the state government was withholding the beneficiaries’ list impeding the disbursal of benefits to farmers in Karnataka.

Umesh Jadhav, the legislator from Chincholi who quit the Congress earlier this week, formally joined the BJP on Wednesday and was present on the stage with Modi. Shah took a dig at the anti-BJP opposition alliance in Nizamabad district of Telangana, saying each leader of the Mahagathbandhan will be prime minister for each day of the week, as the parties still don’t know who their prime ministerial candidate is.
