PremiumNew Delhi: More than 60 days after a complete clampdown was imposed on communication in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday announced that all post-paid mobile services in the Valley would be restored from Monday.
Though landline services in Kashmir had been restored last month, the administration raised concerns over the resumption of mobile services.
“After reviewing the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, a decision was taken to restore mobile phone facilities in all the remaining areas of Jammu & Kashmir. More specifically, all post-paid mobile phones, irrespective of the telecom service provider, will stand restored and be functional from 12 noon on Monday, 14 October, 2019. This will cover all 10 districts of Kashmir province," principal secretary of planning, monitoring and development, Rohit Kansal, said in Srinagar.
The decision is in tandem with the J&K administration’s notification lifting the ban on the inflow of tourists into Kashmir – two months after all tourists were abruptly asked to leave the valley and the Amarnath Yatra was suspended.
“Tourists will be able to visit the state without being handicapped by the lack of phone connectivity. Students can be in touch with parents while attending schools, businessmen can be in touch with customers, transporters can contact clients, and contractors can be in touch with staff," Kansal added.
Kashmir has been grappling with sporadic attacks by militants in the wake of Article 370 being struck down by the Centre, with militants threatening locals to continue a civil resistance, even as the state administration has urged people to come out and resume work.
“The government is firm in its resolve that the attempts of these disruptive elements will be foiled. A number of restrictions were imposed from 4 August in order to prevent externally aided terrorists from disturbing peace and inflicting casualties on innocent citizens," Kansal said, adding that “attempts from across the border are being made to disturb normal life. Credible inputs are being received about the likelihood of large-scale terrorist attacks, sponsored by forces inimical to the nation and from outside its borders."
