West Bengal police detained BJP MP Locket Chatterjee as the women's team of the saffron party was heading for trouble-torn Sandeshkhali on Friday. Chaterjee and a police officer enter into a verbal altercation.
A delegation of the National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) and BJP team led by Chatterjee and Agnimitra Paul, both general secretaries of the West Bengal unit had planned to visit Sandeshkhali, which has been marred with protests over allegations of atrocities on villagers by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders.
However, they were stopped by the police, citing prohibitory orders.
The NHRC had issued a notice to the state government and police chief regarding ongoing violence and human rights violations in the area.
On Thursday, angry locals set fire to properties belonging to TMC leaders accused of tormenting villagers in Sandeshkhali.
Besides, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes compiled multiple complaints of forced land seizures and torture from the region.
The Sandeshkhali area has been witnessing unrest for over 10 days as women protestors are seeking justice against alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides.
A large number of women in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district had accused Trinamool Congress strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of "land-grab and sexually assaulting" them under coercion.
Shajahan has been absconding after a mob, allegedly affiliated with him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials who had gone to search his premises in connection with a ration scam on January 5.
