The Supreme court has formed a five judge constitutional bench to hear petitions challenging the abrogation of provisions under Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. According to reports, the hearings will begin 1 October.

The bench will be presided by Justice N.V. Ramana and comprise Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, R. Subhash Reddy, B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant.

Reports said Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has allowed the formation of other special benches of which some would deal with death penalty, transfer petitions and bail petitions. The composition of the bench has not been announced so far.

The Centre in August scrapped Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, which granted the state special status, and bifurcated it into two union territories — J&K and Ladakh.

On 28 August, the Supreme Court announced, vide its order, that it will hear all pleas related to abrogation of Article 370 in the first week of October.

The top court, on the same date, also issued notice to the Centre on a plea by Kashmir Times Executive Editor, Anuradha Bhasin, seeking a direction for relaxing restrictions on internet, landline, and other communication channels in the state. It had sought a detailed response from the central government within seven days.

In other related orders, the apex court bench, comprising Justices S A Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer, allowed CPM leader Sitaram Yechury to visit J&K and meet his party leader and former MLA, Yousuf Tarigami.
