NCP chief Sharad Pawar has named Supriya Sule and Praful Patel as working presidents of the Nationalist Congress Party. The announcement was made during the party's 25th anniversary celebration.
Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar's nephew and a prominent figure within the NCP, was present during the announcement. According to reports, Supriya Sule has been given the charge of three states including Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab along with coordination in Lok Sabha. Praful Patel, on the other hand, could have been made in charge of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will go for assembly polls later this year.
Previously, Sharad Pawar had offered to resign from his position as party president, prompting strong objections from party members and other political leaders. However, a panel within the NCP formed to discuss Pawar's resignation rejected it on May 5 and urged him to continue serving as party president.
While taking back his resignation, Pawar had said, “I can't disrespect your sentiments. Due to your love, I am respecting the demand that was made to me to withdraw my resignation and the resolution that was passed by senior NCP leaders. I withdraw my decision to step down as the national president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),"
The three-day high-intensity situation within the NCP saw fierce protests from the party members demanding the senior leader to take back his resignation.
On June 9, Supriya Sule had claimed that she received a threatening message meant for her father and NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar. The Lok Sabha MP said, "I received a message on WhatsApp for Pawar Sahab. He was threatened through a website. So, I have come to the Police demanding justice. I urge Maharashtra Home Minister and Union Home Minister to act. Such actions represent low-level politics and should stop,"
