Sharad Pawar on Saturday explained why his nephew Ajit Pawar has not been considered for the post of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president when he decided to reshuffle the party ranks, announcing two working presidents. Explaining why, Sharad Pawar has said his nephew Ajit Pawar already has responsibilities as the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly. Sharad Pawar has named Praful Patel and Supriya Sule as working presidents of the party, marking a generational shift in the organisation.
Sharad Pawar has also said that the decision to appoint two working presidents in the party was a well-thought-out decision by the seniors of the party. When asked if Ajit Pawar, who has often registered his aspirations to be the chief minister, was happy with the announcement, Sharad Pawar said he was one of the senior party members to take the decision.
When the decision was being announced, Ajit Pawar was observed on stage, fidgeting with a bottle before proceeding to applaud. While he left the party office soon after the announcement and without interacting with the media, Ajit Pawar later took to Twitter to congratulate Supriya Sule and Praful Patel.
“Under the leadership and guidance of respected Sharad Chandra Pawar Saheb, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is making its debut in the silver jubilee year with the idea of 'Maharashtra in the heart... eyes in front of the nation...' will make a valuable contribution to the development of the country and the state. It is believed that every worker and office bearer of the NCP will work towards this goal. Congratulations again to the newly elected officials!” Ajit Pawar said.
By making Supriya Sule in charge of Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar has effectively made nephew Ajit Pawar report to her on party matters, a move that could lead to unease in the party.
