TDP begins internal review after poll defeat, but no organizational changes yet

HYDERABAD : The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has started analysing the reasons behind the massive loss to the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in both the Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Open review meetings with state-level leaders have begun, said senior party leaders. However, internal meetings for organizational changes may not be held immediately, they added.

Party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu’s son and TDP general secretary Nara Lokesh may tour the state from July, but the details have not been worked out yet, said a senior party leader, requesting anonymity.

“Basically, we did lose a chunk of the backward classes (BC) vote share, which is supposed to be the backbone of the TDP," he added

The TDP registered one of its worst performances in the 2019 elections, winning just three out of the 25 parliamentary seats in Andhra Pradesh, and 23 out of the 175 assembly constituencies. The YSRCP, led by chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, stormed to power.

A major reason for TDP’s rout was anti-incumbency against the Naidu government. Besides, the Jana Sena Party (JSP), led by actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan, also ate into TDP’s vote share by splitting the Kapu community’s votes Kalyan belongs to the Kapu community.

“The review meetings pertaining to the election results began last week, but the internal meetings might get delayed if the state election commission announces the commencement of the local body polls. We will soon know how much responsibility Lokesh will have, but as of now it does not look like there will be any major organizational change," said the TDP leader quoted above.

Naidu had seized control of the TDP in the 1990s from party founder and father-in-law N.T. Rama Rao. He has since then remained the unchallenged leader. “There has been no suggestion for any change, given that Chandrababu Naidu made sure that nobody else is equal to him in stature in the party," he added.

“The TDP should have known by now what went wrong. Naidu in 2015 or 2016 should have started with the premise that he is losing in 2019, and should have begun working backwards to try and prevent it. YSRCP chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy stood his ground then. The TDP should have pre-empted its downfall in that situation, but Chandrababu Naidu, who claims to be the most experienced politician, did not forsee the situation and failed to accept that he can be defeated," said Hyderabad-based political analyst Palwai Raghavendra Reddy.

The TDP had an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 Lok Sabha and assembly elections. However, its decision to break ties with the BJP, and the JSP going separately, were two factors that were overlooked by the TDP, Reddy said. “Both those parties helped the TDP win in 2014 and all three together had a vote share of just 2% more than the YSRCP," he added.
