HYDERABAD : The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Tuesday suspended its sitting MLA and government whip Meda Mallikarjuna Reddy amidst reports of him joining the main opposition YSR Congress Party. TDP supremo and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu after conducting a meeting with party workers at Rajampet, the assembly constituency which Mallikarjuna Reddy represents.

The Rajampet MLA’s reported decision to join the YSRCP comes as a surprise as until now defections (23 since 2014) have taken place to the TDP from the YSRCP. According to a TDP functionary, who did not want to be quoted, the MLA had differences internally with workers and hence decided to leave. He was the only one from the TDP who had won a seat in Kadapa district, which is considered to be a YSRCP stronghold, in the 2014 assembly elections.

A YSRCP functionary, who did not want to be quoted, said that Mallikarjuna Reddy did not join the opposition party yet, and that he is likely to do so in the presence of YSRCP supremo Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. “Mallikarjuna Reddy might also be asked to resign as an MLA before he joins us. There are other TDP MLAs who are in touch with us, but nothing concrete has come of that," added the functionary.

“Mallikarjuna Reddy was involved in anti-party activities and was colluding with the YSRCP. From the last two years we were hearing about it, but he used to reject it," TDP spokesperson Lanka Dinakar told Mint.

Since the 2014 AP assembly polls, 23 YSRCP MLAs have defected to the TDP, increasing its strength from 102 to 125 in the 175-member assembly. The YSRCP’s numbers fell from 67 to 44. AP is set to go to polls in April-May along with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections this year.
