Hyderabad: The Congress’ Telangana unit will hold a series of meetings on Tuesday to discuss various issues, including its upcoming membership drive and the party’s strategy, especially after 12 of its 18 MLAs defected to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) earlier this year. The top party leadership, Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), apart from state-level leaders will be present for the executive committee and Hyderabad Congress committee meeting.
The development is significant as the meetings are being held for the first time since the December 2018 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress managed to win just 19 seats of the 119 assembly seats, and Lok Sabha seats.
The Congress looks increasingly in danger of losing its status as the main opposition in the state following the BJP’s growing clout. “The meetings are significant, and they are being held for the first time. The BJP won just one assembly seat, but managed to win 4 Lok Sabha seats, so that has given them hope now. But this is a testing time for the Congress in Telangana," said a senior Congress leader who did not want to be quoted. He added that only a total revamp of the state leadership will revive the party now.
Within the party, there has been criticism of N. Uttam Kumar Reddy’s leadership, who is the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief and MP from Nizamabad, especially after the poor performance in the 2018 state polls. “It is my understanding that he has offered to resign," the Congress leader added.
