Hyderabad: The ‘Congress Loyalist Forum’, an internal group formed by a section of state party leaders, on Wednesday urged Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi to appoint an interim national president to instill confidence among party workers.
The forum, in its letter to the Congress leader, said the resignation of Rahul Gandhi “further demoralized the rank and file, giving ammunition to our political adversaries".
Formed over the last few weeks to take into account the sentiment of grass-roots level workers, the ‘Congress Loyalist Forum’ said the party was not able to win the December 2018 assembly elections due to “gross mismanagement of the process of electioneering at the state level", including ‘parachuters’ or those who had joined the party recently but were given more importance in terms of ticket distribution.
The forum, led by ex-MLA Marri Shashidhar Reddy, said winning three out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in the general elections was also no consolation as the Congress lost a lot of space to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which managed four parliamentary seats in spite of winning just one assembly seat in the 2018 state election.
The forum members also raised the issue of defections after the state and Lok Sabha polls.
In spite of the negative developments, no corrective measures were taken by the state leadership and many Congress members were unhappy with Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief N. Uttar Kumar Reddy.
“Because of the vaccum in the central leadership after Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, the state unit here has been impacted. Taking note of that, we have come together and are taking steps required to address these issues," said Shashidhar Reddy.
